Defeating Satan
Throughout the book of Revelation we read of overcoming, and in 12:11 we learn three things about those whom Satan simply could not defeat:
First of all, these overcomers dealt to Satan “because of the blood of the Lamb.” Here is our greatest need, forgiveness. When the paralytic was brought to Jesus the Lord’s first words were: “My son your sins are forgiven” (Mk 2:9). Yes, of course the paralytic wanted to walk again and of course the healing of his body transformed his life – but Christ’s gift of forgiveness was an infinitely greater blessing. One day when our houses and our cars and our careers have turned to dust only one important question will remain: “Am I covered by the blood?” Overcomers are!
Second, these overcomers dealt to Satan “because of the word of their testimony,” meaning that they adhered to the truth in their suffering. In a word, overcomers overcome because they walk the walk and don’t just talk the talk. It’s not hard to confess Christ “in church” and it’s not hard to be faithful among brethren, but what about when we are outnumbered by the scoffers, the mockers and the scorners? Do we stand with Christ then? Overcomers do!
Finally, these overcomers dealt to Satan because “they did not love their life even to death.” Rather than deny their Lord they chose death by fire, death by torture, death in prison and death in the cages of wild beasts. But you and I know the truth. You and I know that in fact what they chose was not death but life; the life of the overcomer. We are to love one thing more than life itself. Overcomers do!
