Destroying God’s Gift

Destroying God’s Gift

Destroying God’s Gift

According to God’s inspired spokesman, “children are a heritage (gift NASB NET) from the Lord,” His “reward” or favour to those who enjoy the blessing of parenthood (Psa 127:3). But throughout history, when the light of His word has been extinguished or dimmed, innocent, vulnerable infants have suffered terribly at the hands of those who should have cherished them. For example, according to Plutarch, under Spartan law, weak and deformed children were put to death (Life of Lycurgus). Tertullian records that the Romans ” (chose) some of the cruellest (kinds of death) for their own children, such as drowning, or starving with cold or hunger, or exposing to the mercy of dogs…”  (Apology 9).  Across cultures and ages, children’s lives have been sacrificed on altars to false gods, ended due to economic considerations, or left vulnerable to wild beasts.

Of course, today our war on children is much more sophisticated and clinical. According to a media release from Family First (April 19th, 2024) “an average of almost 45 children per day (are) killed in the womb in New Zealand.” According to the release, “there has been a 25% increase in abortions since the end of 2019 when the number was just 12,948” Evidently, 16,214 abortion procedures took place in our tiny country in 2023.

Even more troubling is the advocacy by some prominent Western figures for what has been termed “after-birth abortion,” a euphemism for infanticide. Nobel Laureate James Watson, famous for co-discovering the genetic code, once wrote:

If a child were not declared alive until three days after birth, then all parents could be allowed the choice . . . the doctor could allow the child to die, if the parents so choose, and save a lot of misery and suffering (AMA Prism, Ch. 3, p. 2, May 1973).

In 1995, philosopher Peter Singer—recognised as one of the world’s 100 most influential people by Time magazine—wrote an article with the charming title Killing Babies Isn’t Always Wrong. Singer, who has been described as having “rockstar status” in philosophy, advocated for the permissibility of euthanising babies who have certain defects.

How did we get here? It’s simple. We lost God, and without God, man has no moral compass. Let’s love our children enough to teach them about the God whose image we bear.
